University Overview

Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as "the mother of a university," modeled after the collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The college was established on the site of the former Augustinian Priory of All Hallows, granted by the city of Dublin. For its first two centuries, Trinity was exclusively for members of the Church of Ireland, with Catholic and Dissenter students only admitted from 1793 onwards. The 19th century saw significant expansion, with the establishment of professional schools and the construction of landmark buildings including the Museum Building. Women were first admitted to Trinity in 1904. The university has produced numerous distinguished alumni, including writers Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, and Samuel Beckett (Nobel laureate), as well as scientists William Rowan Hamilton and Ernest Walton (Nobel laureate). In the 20th century, Trinity evolved into a modern research university while maintaining its collegiate traditions. Today, it stands as Ireland's most internationally recognized university, combining its historic legacy with contemporary innovation.
