University Overview

Santa Monica College was founded in 1929 as Santa Monica Junior College, operating on the campus of Santa Monica High School. The college moved to its own 38-acre campus in Santa Monica in 1952. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, SMC grew rapidly and established itself as a premier transfer institution. The college gained recognition for its high transfer rates to UCLA, USC, and other four-year universities. In the 1970s and 1980s, SMC expanded its curriculum to include career education programs and international student services. The college established its Academy of Entertainment and Technology in 1994 to meet the needs of the region's creative industries. SMC opened its Malibu campus in 2003 to serve students in that community. The college has been recognized nationally for its international student program, which attracts students from over 100 countries.
