San Francisco State University (SF State or SFSU) is a public research university located in San Francisco, California . It is part of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system and is situated on a 141.1-acre main campus in the southwest part of the city, less than two miles from the Pacific coast . The university also maintains a Downtown Campus in the city's financial district . SF State is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" and is designated as both a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution (AANAPISI) . It is known for having one of the most diverse student bodies among U.S. universities and ranks first among U.S. universities for the number of students who study abroad for an academic year . The university is organized into six academic colleges: Liberal & Creative Arts, Business, Education, Ethnic Studies (the only one of its kind in the nation), Health and Social Sciences, and Science & Engineering . SF State offers bachelor's degrees in 76 academic areas, master's degrees in 63 academic areas, and doctoral programs including a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and a clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) . The university enrolls approximately 23,700 students, with over 20,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students, supported by 1,822 faculty members . Its athletic teams, the Gators, compete in NCAA Division II as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) .
