University Overview

New York Institute of Technology was founded in 1955 by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York as a need for a private, technologically oriented institution of higher education. The university opened its first campus at 500 Pacific Street in Brooklyn in 1958. In 1963, NYIT acquired the former Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney estate in Old Westbury, establishing its Long Island campus. The 1960s and 1970s saw rapid expansion with the addition of schools of architecture, engineering, and management. NYIT was a pioneer in computer graphics and animation, with faculty and students contributing to early computer-animated films. In 1979, NYIT opened its New York City campus at 1855 Broadway in Manhattan. The university has been a leader in online education since the 1980s. NYIT established its first international campus in Jordan in 2000, followed by campuses in Canada, China, and the UAE. The university celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2020 and continues to focus on technology and innovation.
