University Overview

Its origins date back to 1909 as the Loughborough Technical Institute, established to provide technical skills for local industry. It became Loughborough College of Technology in 1952 and was granted a Royal Charter as Loughborough University of Technology in 1966. The "of Technology" was dropped in 1996 to reflect its broadened academic portfolio. A defining development was the 1977 merger with Loughborough College of Education. It has pioneered the integration of sport and academia, becoming the UK's premier university for sports-related subjects and hosting national training centres.
