University Overview

IU International University of Applied Sciences was founded on September 1, 2000, as IUBH (International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef), with the first 23 students beginning their studies. In 2001, the first four international students joined the university, marking the beginning of its global expansion. IU held its first graduation ceremony in 2004, celebrating the achievements of its early graduates. A major milestone came in 2016 with the introduction of the first online exam, pioneering flexible learning formats. By 2017, IU had reached 50,000 students, demonstrating its rapid growth and popularity. In 2021, the university was officially renamed from IUBH to IU International University of Applied Sciences to reflect its broader mission and reach. By 2023, IU surpassed 130,000 students in total, cementing its position as Germany's largest university. In 2025, IU celebrates its 25th anniversary with over 3,000 international students on campus in Berlin alone. Under the theme '25 Years of Education for Everyone,' the university continues its mission of making quality education accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstances.
