University Overview

Graceland University was founded in 1895 as Graceland College by members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ). The college was named after the "grace of the land" that characterized the Iowa prairie location. Construction of the first building, Higdon Hall, began in 1895, and the college opened its doors to students in 1897. Throughout the 20th century, Graceland expanded its academic programs and facilities while maintaining its church affiliation. In the 1970s, the college established its Independence campus to serve students in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Graceland became Graceland University in 2000 to reflect its growing graduate programs. The university has long been recognized for its study abroad programs and the innovative "Winter Term" that allows students to pursue intensive travel courses. Notable alumni include NFL players, educators, and church leaders. Graceland celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2020.
